Day 4: Cactus (Inktober Flash Fiction)

Inktober 2026 prompt list

They say everyone remembers where they were when it happened. Me? I was about 40 miles west of Ely, Nevada, watching Thompson work through the bends once he finally stopped flickering. We were under a radio silence order out there, so the whole team jumped when Yamagata’s comm lit up. The government hid the portal behind layers of clearance; the only ones who had ever even seen it were the four of us and the cactus growing next to it. But the news was big. It happened.

Ramirez had hidden a beer for the occasion, and we all took celebratory sips as Thompson stumbled around. We could barely see his face through the puke on his visor, but you could tell he was grinning in there. When it was my turn with the beer, I tipped it towards him. He gave us two thumbs up before he collapsed.

Wait. What the fuck is this?
